Have you always wanted to do a family history, but don’t know where to begin?  Are you a teacher who wants to incorporate oral history into your classroom?  Are you trying to document the history of your town and want to know more about oral history techniques?  Then this workshop is for you!   The New Hampshire Archives Group will be holding An Introduction to Oral History; a Beginner’s Workshop on Wednesday, May 7th from 9am to 4pm.  The workshop will focus on these important questions about oral history:

  • What is oral history and how is it different from other forms of history?

  • What do you need to know before you get started?

  •  How can oral history be incorporated into a classroom curriculum?

  •  What kind of technology should you use to capture the information?

  •  What do you do with the information/media once you have it?

Workshop leader, Stacy Penna, will answer these questions – and others- throughout the day with discussions of technique, current technological options, and archival storage methods, as well as provide an opportunity to practice some newly acquired techniques.

An educator, Stacy Penna has taught social studies and history to middle school students and diploma students at Exeter Adult Education.  She has written elementary and high school curriculums for the American Independence Museum in Exeter, New Hampshire.  She created an Oral History Project through a grant from New Hampshire’s Adult Education Department.  Stacy recently graduated with her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Graduate School of Education Leadership in Schooling Program. Currently, she is a Business Development Manager with QSR International a company that develops NVivo, software for qualitative research.
